eBay: HOW TO AVOID WET PACKAGES AND WATER DAMAGE FOR LESS THAN 2 PENNIES...

An Easy Way To Prevent Water Damage During Shipping:

I live in sunny California, where it rarely rains. But I like to sell on eBay, and I don’t want my product to arrive at my customer’s door drenched. One gentleman wrote about his postman leaving packages between the screen door and the front door, when it rains. The contents were still ruined. He liked to buy comic books. He did not complain to the post office, since the other delivery services left his packages on the curb, at least the post office brought them to his door, and tried to protect them. After reading several posts about water damaged packages, I decided it was best to protect the contents from moisture, so I began to look for a low cost solution.

For medium to small items, I bought a roll of High Density Polyethylene Food Grade bags. I bought the large bags, which are 11” x 19”. They come on a roll of 1,240 bags. The bags are not thick, that measurement is 0.35 mil. Their purpose is to provide a moisture barrier. So if you pack your package, so things do not move around, nothing should puncture the bag. This solution runs about a cent and one half (1 ½ cents) per bag.

Those measurements, 11” x 19, sound big. But believe me, the bag is not. A small women’s purse, 11’’ x 7’’ x 2’’, when wrapped in bubble wrap, filled this bag. I like to have enough of the bag left over at the end so that I can roll it down and tape it. The purse went inside of a box to prevent the purse from being crushed.

The T-shirt went into this bag and then into a poly mailer, which is much tougher, and which adds additional protection against moisture. The inner bag also kept the T-shirt from unfolding.

I ended up using one bag per every 4 DVDs that I shipped recently. The dimensions of the cardboard box limited the number of DVDs that I could put into the plastic bag. I will also add bubble wrap to fill any empty space, so that the DVDs can not move around.

I purchased these bags at Smart and Final. If you do not have a Smart and Final store in your area, you might try a restaurant or janitorial supply store.
